The future lies in the hands of those who will follow. No matter how hard your struggle, how sweet the victory or how unifying the revolution had been, its fate will always depend on the next generation. The generation that has only heard of what you have done and not felt it. The generation that will reap what you have sowed. Thus, for any

nation, it is important that its youth is better than those who came before them, especially for a people in crisis. So, when the successors of a legacy of struggle are like Tenzin Dhardon Sharling, hope lives on.

The youngest member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile, Ms. Tenzin Dhardon Sharling is the Information Secretary of the Department of Information and International Relations of the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamshala. Being the face of young Tibet comes with its own challenges and responsibilities which Ms. Sharling is facing with the most inspiring outlook.

Early Days

Since her days in college, Ms. Sharling had been an active participant in discussions concerning Tibetan politics. After completing her Masters she served in Tibetan Women’s Association and International Tibet Network expanding her knowledge on the power of dialogue through practical experience. With former secretary, Kalon Tenpa as her father figure, she observed the action in detail.

The Tibet issue has been a long-standing one with years of struggle that continues to this day. This sense of patriotism along with the values of Buddhism inculcated in her life gave Ms. Sharling a sense of where she wanted to see her country headed and the part she wanted to play in it.

The Kalon

While her nomination as the Information Secretary of the Department of Information and International Relations had a rough start, Ms. Sharling’s resolve remained unshaken. Being three months short of the required age of 35, her nomination had to be retracted till she met the requirements. The most significant international issue that the Tibetan community has to face is its negotiations with China.

As head of the department dealing with International Relations, Ms. Sharling employs the approach of understanding both sides to reach the best possible solution. In an interview, she said that it was important to study the dynamics of this dialogue from both perspectives if they want to accomplish their goals. This issue is not between two countries alone but involves a lot of international influence thus making it far more delicate than it appears on the outside. With the hopes of all her people pinned on her, Ms. Sharling moves forward in a diplomatic world guided by the preaching of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama.

The Youth Icon

Ms. Sharling is the flag bearer of the modern Tibetan youth. She often recalls how she managed to get her priorities straight for what she worked for was far more important than the distractions that we often surround ourselves with. Shedding the sense of individuality and voicing the opinion of the masses is not an easy task. While she might disagree with many opinions she has to voice in her capacity of Kalon, Ms. Sharling promotes that it is the will of the masses that guides a leader.

With role models such as her guiding the younger generation the future does not seem as frightening as the present is. While change needs to occur on a holistic level, it has to start by tackling one mind at a time. Communication being the strongest tool for the purpose, in Tibet, is in the capable hands of Ms. Tenzin Dhardon Sharling. Dedication, devotion, and understanding of a higher purpose that results in collective good are what Ms. Sharling stands for, among other things.

The strength that the people of Tibet display is admirable. With His Holiness, the Dalai Lama to guide and inspire them through these trying times, Tibet instills a sense of national pride, unity, and harmony in the hearts of the entire world. To enlighten us of this strength that binds this nation in exile together, Ms. Tenzin Dhardon Sharling will honor the TEDxDharamshala stage on 12th of November, to talk about “Leading Freedom in Exile”.
